The cylinder should be rebored if the surface is scored or abraded. Pistons are available in oversize increases of 0.5 mm and 1.0 mm. Purchase the oversize pistons before having the cylinder bored.

The pistons must first be measured and the cylinder bored to match them in order to maintain the specified piston-to-cylinder clearance. All pistons should be replaced as a set. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM The electrical system consists of the following subsystems:. Charging system. Starting system. Ignition system. CHARGING SYSTEM The charging system consists of the battery, alternator, rectifier and regulator. See Figure 1 for all 1978 and earlier models and Figure 2 for all 1979 and later models. The alternator generates an alternating current (AC) which the rectifier converts to direct currect (DC).

The regulator maintains the voltage going to the battery and the load (lights, ignition, etc.) at a constant level regardless of the variations in engine speed and load. On 1979 and later models, the rectifier and regulator are combined in one unit. If either function of the unit fails, the entire unit must be replaced. On all 1978 and earlier models, the rectifier and regulator are separate units.

Whenever a charging system trouble is suspected, make sure the battery is fully charged and in good condition before beginning any tests. Make sure all connections are clean and tight.
